What are the chances of you being severely injured in a road traffic accident? Well, statistically you’re far less likely to become a casualty than you were when compulsory driving tests were first introduced in 1934. However, the chances of injury are still unfortunately too high for road safety campaigners.
The number of people killed in road accidents reported to the police increased by 4 per cent to 1,775 in 2014 from 1,713 in 2013. This is the third lowest figure since national records began in 1926 and is 45 per cent fewer fatalities than a decade earlier in 2005. However, in 2014, there were still 22,807 seriously injured casualties in reported road traffic accidents. Whilst this figure is lower than 2012, it is still 5.3 per cent higher than 2013.
So just how serious is the problem? Should drivers, passengers and pedestrians be worried? Well in total there were 194,477 casualties of all severities in reported road traffic accidents during 2014. As previously mentioned this was 5.9 per cent higher than the figure for 2013. However, what is concerning is that 2014 saw the first increase in casualties since 1997.
What’s more, the latest published statistics show that around 900,000 drivers under the age of 30 are currently driving without insurance, costing every car insurance policy holder as much as £30. Moreover, there are around 160 deaths caused each year in road accidents involving uninsured and untraced drivers and approximately a further 23,000 injuries. Uninsured drivers are more likely to be involved in hit-and-run incidents than insured drivers, often resulting with the insured driver making a car accident claim on their insurance affecting their no claims discount, even though the uninsured vehicle may have been to blame.
